I've been at Anglian Water for 14 years. I was attracted to the company because of the job security and because my father had worked there.

I came in as a trainee inspector. My training took four years. The first three involved becoming familiar with every aspect of the business that was relevant to the role.

I spent time in the call centre, in the lab, and with the plumbing side. As part of the training program, the company paid for my studies at college, where I got my City and Guilds qualification.

My training

Training has been ongoing the whole time I've been here, especially for anything that affects water quality or policy and procedure, like the New Roads and Streetworks Act. We always get training before a change is taken on board, so there's a lead-in period.

Now I'm a Network Technician. I handle the public's queries about their water supply. For example, if someone reports a leak or low pressure to the call centre, my job is to call or visit the customer and explain the situation. Most of the time people are happy to see you because they've got a problem they want you to resolve. You never know what's going to come up. No day's exactly the same.

What I love about the company

My favorite part of the job is shutting mains off and repairing them because it's quick result. Fixing a broken main can mean a thousand people coming back on water.
