Corporate responsibility at Anglian Water is overseen by our Corporate Responsibility Committee (CRC). Its membership comprises our Chief Operating Officer, a Non-Executive Director and other senior executives. The Committee meets three to four times a year.

Though not a formal Board committee, it reports directly to the Board. Its purpose is to help, encourage and challenge management to stretch their thinking on planning, communications, environmental, reputational and social issues which are expected to impact on the performance of the Group, over the long term.

Reporting to the CRC and the Boards of each of our businesses is the Corporate Responsibility Steering Group, with senior staff from all parts of the business meeting on a bi-monthly basis.

This is the forum for communication between the businesses and the CRC, and is where initiatives are developed and project process reported.

Anglian Water believes that corporate responsibility (CR) is about supporting and actively encouraging strategies and behaviours that demonstrate our commitment to the long-term viability of the business.

This reinforces our belief that business decisions should take into account social and environmental issues, as well as economic ones.

It is about making sure that we manage the key elements of our day-to-day business and long-term planning in ways that are sustainable. We seek to demonstrate to all of our stakeholders (customers, communities, investors, employees, the regulators and other outside agencies) that we make sound business decisions that ensure their needs are met, not just this year but into the uncertain future. Corporate responsibility is overseen by the Corporate Responsibility Committee, which meets three to four times a year.

The Committee sets the vision and strategy. It approves the annual and long-term targets and challenges the company’s performance against them. The Committee includes:

  • Peter Simpson, Managing Director and Chair of the CR Committee
  • Robert Napier, Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Meteorological Office
  • Mark Pendlington, Director of Corporate Affairs
  • Kate Kelly, Group HR and Change Director
  • Jean Spencer, Director of Regulation
  • Phil Brown, Head of Performance and Development
  • Rick Butler, Project Manager, Licence to Operate and Employee Representative
  • Amanda Long. Head of Corporate Responsibility

The Corporate Responsibility Steering Group (CSG) meets every other month to co-ordinate day-to-day corporate responsibility activities and review progress against the plan.

Individuals leading corporate responsibility-related projects also attend as required. The Corporate Responsibility Manager reports to the Head of Performance and Development and is responsible for promoting corporate responsibility within the company and ensuring that its aims are embedded within each of Anglian Water’s business units.

The Corporate Responsibility Manager also tracks Anglian Water’s performance against its targets. The Director of each Business Unit is responsible for delivering the company’s targets. Corporate responsibility targets, such as those relating to energy conservation, are incorporated into individual Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) and personal development plans as appropriate.
