Keeping rivers and beaches clean

Canoe paddling down the river

The majority of the litter on beaches and riverbanks does not come from the wastewater system. Visitors have the biggest opportunity to reduce litter levels by using bins or by taking their litter home.

Wastewater treatment works cannot remove all plastic items from incoming wastewater. We can all help reduce this problem by not treating the toilet as an invisible dustbin and therefore prevent small items getting through the system and potentially causing harm to the environment and wildlife.

Anglian Water supports the national Bag It & Bin It which is also supported by leading chemists and sanitary product manufacturers. The campaign aims to prevent wastewater-related debris from littering British beaches and riverbanks by educating people not to flush disposable products down the toilet - urging them instead to 'Bag It & Bin It'.

So when you visit one of the rivers or beaches in our region - enjoying the wildlife, having a walk or boating - have a great time, please remember to take all your litter home. And at home use the bin and not the toilet for items such as disposable nappies, sanitary products and cotton buds. Remember - Bag It and Bin It.

Sustaining healthy rivers is essential to protect the aquatic environment and is a key priority for Anglian Water.

You could also join our RiverCare programme and get involved with helping your community improve the local river environment.
