Keep It Clear - did you know facts

Did you know?

  • Anglian Water has enough sewer pipe work to go round the world twice. On average our teams are dealing with a blockage at least every fifteen minutes 24/7.
  • Most of the 30,000 blockages we fix each year are caused by the build-up of fats, oils, greases, sanitary waste and wipes.
  • We are spending over £15million every year clearing sewer blockages – a cost that contributes to bill increases.
  • 80% of sewer flooding incidents to homes/gardens and environmental pollution incidents in the Anglian Water region are as a result of a sewer blockage.
  • There are 20,000 tonnes of fat, oil and grease in Anglian Water’s sewer at anyone time, enough to fill 8 Olympic sized swimming pools – 5 of these swimming pools of fat comes from householders disposing of small amounts of fat down the sink each day.
  • Cotton buds if flushed causes millions of pounds of damage each year to sewer pumps and treatment works.
  • All unflushable items like sanitary waste, wipes, fats, oils and grease have an expensive journey through the sewer network contributing to blockages, sewer flooding and pollution incidents, before it arrives at the local treatment works – where it is all sent landfill anyway.
  • If you flush your toilet and the water comes to the top and doesn’t clear – this is the first sign you have a blocked pipe. DON’T be tempted to flush again until you have tried to physically remove the blockage in the toilet.
  • The average cost of a plumber call out visit is between £60 and £240.
  • You can avoid the risk of expensive blockage clearance call outs by putting your used wipes, bathroom waste and cooking fat into the bin.
  • Currently no wipes on the market meet water industry flushability guidelines even if they say they are flushable.
