Bathing water performance and awards

Sherringham Beach

In total there are 49 designated bathing waters in the East of England, stretching from Cleethorpes in the north near the Humber Estuary to Southend Leigh Bell Wharf in the south near the Thames Estuary.

These beaches and swimming areas are officially classed as bathing waters according to the European Bathing Water Directive 2000/60/EC. This legislation applies to all of the other bathing waters in the UK too.

The European Union's Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) categorises the water quality at each bathing water as Excellent, Good or Poor according to water samples collected throughout the bathing water season (May-September) over a four year period by the Environment Agency. Information about the water quality at each bathing water can be found on the Environment Agency website.

Bathing waters sample results are available to view on the EA website:

Blue Flag

The European Blue Flag campaign was launched in 1987 and in the UK is co-ordinated by Keep Britain Tidy. Blue Flag is an international award presented to well managed beaches with excellent water quality and environmental education programmes. Valid for one year, bathing water at accredited Blue Flag beaches must attain the excellent classification set in the revised Bathing Water Directive in the previous year as well as 28 separate beach-management criteria.

As a result of the good bathing water quality in 2016, 16 Blue Flags fly during the 2017 bathing season in this region.

Quality Coast Awards

Keep Britain Tidy also administers the Seaside Award. Seaside Awards are presented to the best beaches in England and celebrate the quality and diversity of our coastline. Of the 49 designated bathing beaches in the Anglian Water region, 17 qualified for this award in 2017. There are also some non-designated beaches which hold the award too. The award is a symbol of quality which guarantees that the beach that you are visiting is one of the highest standards.
