Anglian Water is working to reduce waste across our entire business.
In 2007 we launched a 'business swap shop' on our intranet. Different parts of the company advertise spare equipment to release storage space and avoid the expense of someone else buying new. Items range from pumps and fencing to print cartridges and envelopes.
In 27 recent investment schemes more than half (53 per cent) of the excavated soils (totalling almost 60,000 tonnes) was reused on site. This would previously have all gone to landfill. Sludges from Wing Water Treatment Works in Rutland used to go to landfill. Now, all of the sludges (almost 4,000 tonnes per year) are instead used as fuel at the nearby Castle Cement plant at Ketton.
As part of our Water operations' ISO14001:2004 certification, the Plant and Transport Maintenance Team improved its waste handling. The department has seven workshops located around the region and is responsible for maintaining more than1,500 commercial vehicles, servicing 550 company cars and looking after more than 1,500 items of plant, ranging from small pumps to large generators.
Prior to the final assessment for the certification, the Team appointed a single company to handle all of its workshop waste. It also enlisted the help of specialist companies to recycle materials, such as wiring.
Between July 2007 and March 2008 almost one-third of the paper and cardboard waste from our Huntingdon offices and warehouse was sent for recycling.
