The Government’s Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) was set up in 1990 and is responsible for assessing and enforcing the quality of drinking water in England and Wales, with the objective of ensuring that water companies meet their legal responsibilities with regard to drinking water quality.

The DWI carries out detailed inspections on activities and monitors water quality compliance of the water companies’ activities and monitors compliance with water quality standards. If the DWI considers a company is not meeting the necessary standard, it may recommend to the Secretary of State that enforcement action is taken. This requires a company to take corrective action.

Each year the Chief Inspector of Drinking Water publishes a detailed report containing drinking water quality data and results the technical inspections for each water company and the results of the DWI’s technical inspections.  This report, and other information on drinking water quality, is available on the DWI’s web site at www.dwi.gov.uk
