What we're doing to reduce the amount of lead in your drinking water?

Tap illustration

We're acting to reduce the amount of lead which can dissolve in the water in line with new EU limits of lead in drinking water.

Our plan is to replace the number of lead pipes across our region, and we're also installing additional equipment at some of our water treatment works.

But we can't reduce lead on our own, so we’re also working with housing associations, local authorities, health professionals and householders to raise awareness and encourage replacement of customers lead pipework.

Our lead pipe replacement programme

We're currently working in areas of Bedford and Norwich to remove and replace old lead pipework. This planned programme involves us replacing 'lead communication pipes'; this is the section of the pipe which we're responsible for and normally runs from the water main to the property boundary.

We've previously carried out similar replacement work in many areas in our region:

  • Bedford
  • Ipswich
  • Northampton
  • Kettering
  • Peterborough
  • Norwich.

Allowing us, in the past 5 years, to replace over 12,000 lead pipes and we have plans to replace a further 9,000 between now and 2020 - that’s over 20,000 lead pipes taken out of our water supply network.
