Specimen Brown for William Shaw

Martin Webster and his boat partner William Shaw enjoyed a great day at Grafham on Sunday. William caught and returned a lovely brownie whilst drifting off the West Bank. Martin says, ”We estimated it’s weight at just over 5lb and it took an Orange Straggle Palmer. It was one of 15 fish we caught and - all bar one - released. Thanks to the team at Grafham for another great day.”

Fish 243 (season 16956) Returns 70(2768) Rod average 3.47 (6.13)

The good fishing at Grafham continues, although the weather has been contrary. Shrimp are returning to the margins and the bank fishing is set to improve.

Again some good results this week from our anglers, including some very good Rainbows and Browns along with some excellent bags. Mr Whitwell and Mr Jones proved 13 is lucky for some when they each managed 13 fish. Some good Rainbows have been landed with Mr Petch taking a fine fish of 4lb and Mr Barker landing the best Rainbow of the week a cracking 4lb 8oz specimen. The biggest fish of the week was a wonderful 5lb Brown taken by Mr Komrath.

Martin Webster and his boat partner William Shaw enjoyed a great day at Grafham on Sunday despite the blustery conditions. Boat angling is producing the majority of fish with long drifts through open water being more successful than anchoring. Lures are fishing very well but they must be fished fast on an intermediate line. Others are finding good sport in the surface layers with crunchers and hoppers with dries working particularly well too. The best areas to fish include drifting outside the harbour, the Seat, west bank, Sanctuary Bay, Rainbow Point and around M Buoy.

Bank angling can be tough at this time of year with winds blowing algal blooms into the bays and against the dam, though some areas such as the Seat, Sludge Bank, Mander Car Park and the Harbour arms are producing well. A roving approach can produce the best bags at this time of year as the fish can be very active. Shrimp is the common food stuff currently, although corixa is also worth noting in the stomach contents and the usual terrestrials for the time of year.

Coming soon - A new competition – the Grafham Shrimp Masters.

Competition news
GWFFA 2nd bank match Saturday 9th September

Martin Brocklebank has kindly sent us the following report of GWFFA’s recent bank match.
Four GWFFA members fished the 2nd bank match at Grafham Water. A fresh Westerly wind and sun meant the North shore was not fishable so the anglers concentrated their efforts on the South shore. Mark Brinkman and Steve Jones went to The Seat. Both caught fish on shrimp and diawl bachs with floating line. Hilary Tomlinson and Andy Linwood went to Plummer. Hilary caught on a Montana nymph and Andy on hares ear nymphs. The fishing was hard as the fish are still out in open water. The prospects are good as the bank line is full of shrimp, buzzers, bloodworm, snail and fry.
1st    Mark Brinkman 6 fish for 12lb 3oz.
2nd   Steve Jones 3 fish for 6lb 14oz
3rd   Hilary Tomlinson 3 fish for 6lb 7oz.

Best Rainbow                         4lb 8oz taken by Mr Barker.

Best Brown                            5lb taken by Mr Komrath.

Best boat areas                       Rainbow Point, the Dam, open water drifting,
particularly west side of reservoir (M buoy), the Seat,
in front of harbour, west bank and Hill Farm.

Best bank areas                      The Seat, south shore, south dam, Pylon, Harbour Arms,
Sludge Bank, Perry Point and Deep Water Point.

Mid week boat winner            Mr Harley Smith.
