It has been a busy week at Grafham Water with many taking the opportunity to fish over the bank holiday weekend, which has brought us a very respectable rod average of 6.66 in tougher conditions.

Fish 1,065 (season 9,747) Returns 160 (1,011) Rod average 6.66 (9.64)

The best Rainbow of the week was a lovely 4lb 9oz specimen landed by Ian Warren. Other good fish included a fine 3lb 8oz Rainbow for Mr S Pimblett which was matched by Mr French who also managed a 3lb 8oz rainbow. Other rainbows showing themselves included a 3lb 9oz specimen landed by Mr M Matthews. Well done to everyone for some cracking angling.

There has been one fantastic Brownie caught this week, returned and estimated at a whopping 8-9lbs landed by no other than Grafham ranger Mark Haycock. A very well done to you Mark, setting the bar high, good luck to all those trying to beat it!

The fish have begun to become pre-occupied on the buzzer, meaning that takes are not as vigorous as they have been recently. Many fish are being caught on the hang or up in the water as they search out the emerging insects, though be wary, when the sun is shining the fish are more likely to be found closer to the bottom so make sure you have your midge tips with you and use longer leaders.

Boat fishing is particularly successful for all those buzzer and nymph fishing with the added ability to hunt the fish taking dry flies in open water. Though there are plenty of feeding fish in the deeper water the margins are starting to produce some fantastic results with shrimp showing much more commonly in the stomach contents. Some very good fish are being landed across the reservoir with hot spots being Marlow area, the Willows and south dam, though with conditions changing, showing easterly winds for the rest of the week, areas such as Savages, Rainbow Point and West Bank may well be the best areas to start.

Bank fishing is much improved from recent weeks as the fish have moved much closer in. You’ll tend to find better lure fishing on the banks than the boats with an intermediate line being popular amongst the anglers. Top flies as usual would seem to be cats whisker, cat boobies, weighted and un-weighted humungous (black or white) and not to forget the Pitsford Pea. Those fishing the dam are finding varying success using buzzer and nymph, with some anglers producing well over 10 fish in short sessions. Good areas include anywhere along the north shore, Plummers, the Seat and Harbour arms.

Grafham’s Tuesday Night Boat League will be up and running again this year in conjunction with Ivicta. Starting on 16th May and finishing on 15th August there will be 14 weeks of evening boat fishing (every Tuesday - 5.30pm start – 10pm finish). The retail shop will also be open for an extra 30 minutes for any anglers wanting to purchase any tackle.
