Amazing match action at Rutland Water. All 44 anglers in 4 man team event bag up with 8 fish apiece.

Fish 926 (season 30,834) Returns 170 (5,580) Rod average 5.44(5.52)
A tremendous week at Rutland Water with a rod average of 5.44. Boat anglers are enjoying great sport, especially last Wednesday during the four man team event with all 44 competitors catching their eight fish limits.

On the big fish front seven year old Oscar Barr, son of Craig, went out for an evening’s boat fishing. Oscar hooked and netted (with help from Dad) a specimen Brownie that weighed 4lb 12¼oz, well done Oscar! Richard Mosdell and Gary Bateman from Horncastle, Lincolnshire, had a really good day’s boat fishing recently taking 8 hard fighting Rainbows, topped by an 8lb estimated Brown falling to Richard with another two Browns returned.

Big fish have been showing on some days feeding on fry out over the open water. The terns and gulls have been feeding on fry so keep a look out for them as weedbeds are few and far between on the surface, except for the odd ones along the shoreline.

This week the weather has been unsettled with plenty of rain, heavy at times, putting a few anglers off fishing. Towards the end of the week conditions became more settled with most anglers catching fish.

A few anglers are bank fishing including Oakham’s Mick Connor who has had one or two fish on dries and fry patterns with fish moving close in - perseverance and patience are required for these fish.

Rutland Water Flyfishers held an open day last weekend at Rutland Fishing Lodge and had a great response with casting, fly tying and fishing taster sessions proving very popular. The event was supported by Anglian Water who provided boats for newcomers to experience catching numbers of hard fighting Rutland trout. The event concluded on Sunday with a barbeque and drinks. Thanks go to Dave Porter, Brian Bonner, Mick Connor and many other people who contributed to a successful weekend.

Prospects look good with lots of fish out in the open water providing plenty of action with good numbers of hard fighting rainbows. Bigger fish are starting to show and feeding.

We are now at the 13 week stage of this popular league and the prize for biggest fish is still up for grabs with Keith Jones in the lead at the moment with a 4lb 7oz fish. Neil Squires from Lincolnshire won both the best fish and the best bag of week 13 with a 4lb 5¾oz Rainbow. Hilary Tomlinson was second and Richard Cooper third. Hilary deserves a special mention for her outstanding baking skills and the Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle that she kindly provided for the Tuesday Night boat anglers.

Four Man Team Event 9 August
This match was a great success with 11 teams fishing and achieving a rod average of 8 fish per angler! The best fish was a 4lb 7oz Rainbow caught by Mick McLintic fishing for Peregrine Flyfishers. Tony Smith of Invicta Select was top rod weighing in for 23lb 13oz. Invicta Select took team victory.

Fish were found over the open water of the reservoir from the Sailing Club/Spud Bay area to the main basin to the dam. Weather on the day was far from ideal with heavy rain first thing, however, with the consistent stocking levels in the weeks leading up to the match fish were showing in great numbers on the day and were in excellent condition.
