Ospreys on the nest at Rutland Water Park

The nature reserve at Rutland Water Park is an excellent setting for those who enjoy bird watching, with 31 bird watching hides, some with disabled access.

Rutland Water Park is a designated site of Special Scientific Interest and is also designated as a European Special Protection Area and RAMSAR site. Rutland Water Nature Reserve is managed in partnership with the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.

  • The diverse habitats include woodland, grassland and wetland, supporting populations of insects, birds, mammals and amphibians as well as rare plants.
  • There are bird hides, some of which are accessible to wheelchair users, and nature trails.
  • Regular events and activities are held on the nature reserves and volunteers are always welcome. More information can be found on the website links below.
  • Access to the reserve is restricted to permit holders and day and season permits are available.

Each August bird enthusiasts from all over Europe flock to Rutland Water to visit the world renowned British Bird Watching Fair

Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre

The Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre situated at Egleton, at the western end of Rutland Water Park, has excellent facilities. Here you will find interactive displays, a viewing gallery and an In Focus optical shop and Wildlife Trust shop.

The Rutland Osprey project

The first wild Osprey in England for 150 years hatched at Rutland Water in 2001 and now regularly breed here. The detail and progress of the project to establish breeding Ospreys at Rutland Water Park.
The Rutland Osprey Project observes the Osprey from their arrival from Africa in the Spring, through to their Autumn migration.

Activities for children

Rutland Environmental Education Centre (REEC) is located in the Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre on Rutland Water Nature Reserve. It provides an ideal base to access both the main reservoir itself as well as providing an excellent location from which to carry out practical work on the Nature Reserve.

An annual Nature Reserve Permit, valid at Rutland, Grafham, Pitsford, Hollowell, Ravensthorpe, Taverham and Alton Water Parks is available.  For more information please contact one of our Nature Reserves.

A day permit to visit Pitsford Water Park, Hollowell and Ravensthorpe nature reserves can be purchased from the fishing lodge at Holcot, telephone 01604 781350. Family Season Permits and day permits are available (concessions for senior citizens on day permits).
