Birdwatching and nature reserves

Ospreys on the nest at Rutland Water Park

The nature reserves at Anglian Water's water parks provide excellent facilities for those who enjoy bird watching, with purpose built hides and nature trails.

Rutland Water, Grafham Water and Pitsford Water Parks are designated sites of Special Scientific Interest and Rutland Water Park is also designated as a European Special Protection Area and RAMSAR site. The nature reserves are managed in partnership with the local Wildlife Trusts.

  • The diverse habitats include woodland, grassland and wetland, supporting populations of insects, birds, mammals and amphibians as well as rare plants.
  • There are bird hides, some of which are accessible to wheelchair users, and nature trails.
  • Regular events and activities are held on the nature reserves and volunteers are always welcome. More information can be found on the website links below.
  • Access to the reserves is restricted to permit holders and day and season permits are available.

Permits and information leaflets are available from the reserve visitor centres.

The first wild Osprey in England for 150 years hatched at Rutland Water in 2001 and now regularly breed here. Find out more by visiting the Rutland Osprey Project website.

The Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre can be found at Egleton at the western-end of Rutland Water Park. Here you will find interactive displays, viewing gallery plus In-Focus optical shop and Wildlife Trust shop. It is the home of the British Bird Watching Fair each August. Find out how to arrange a group or school visit and the activities available by viewing the Rutland Water Nature Reserve website.

There are small nature reserves at Ravensthorpe and Hollowell reservoirs with access restricted to Pitsford Nature Reserve season ticket holders only.

Alton Water Park attracts a wide range of wildlife both on and around the water. With the help of volunteers Anglian Water has developed a three-mile nature trail on the south shore which includes woodland, a butterfly garden, a wildflower meadow, ponds and a bird hide. Start your visit from the Stutton car park.

At Taverham Mill fishery there is a nature trail around the lake and work has started to create a nature reserve on site. A permit to walk the trail can be purchased from the fishing lodge shop.
