We have many activities especially for children at Rutland Watersports and the Anglian Water Bird watching Centre, Rutland Water Park.

Rutland Watersports, Whitwell

Rutland Watersports provides a wide variety of activities to keep youngsters occupied, including certificated courses. Course run throughout the year and special activities are held during school holidays.   • RYA junior stage one, two, three and four sailing, spinnaker sailing, seamanship, advanced boat handling and start racing.
  • RYA junior level one, two, three and four windsurfing.
  • RYA junior level one and two power-boating.
  • BCU Paddle-sport Start, Paddle-power Passport, Paddle-power Discovery.
  • Certificated multi-activity course.

Junior Watersports Club

Windsurfing, sailing, power-boating and canoeing for children between seven and 15 years. An ideal opportunity to improve skills previously achieved on RYA courses. Courses run every Saturday and Sunday from April to November. Courses are subject to availability and cost between £20 - £25 (£35 for Junior power-boating club)

Junior group bookings

Raft building and other watersports activities are available for groups of six or more children. Minimum two hours.

Birthday parties

If you are stuck for something new to do, birthday parties are very popular with children between the ages of five and 16 years. Activities include raft building and kayak or canoe challenges.

School holiday activities - full day activities run from 10am to 4pm from Monday to Friday throughout all school holidays. WOW summer fun days runs during August only but may be available at other times on request. Booking is essential.

Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre, Egleton

Environmental activity days run by qualified teacher/naturalists assisted by the reserve wardens are regularly held on the nature reserve for children aged between seven and 11 years. Children get the chance to:

  • Explore the nature reserve.
  • Go pond dipping.
  • Go bug hunting.
  • Learn about our Ospreys.
  • Enjoy craft activities.

Winter birds

Walk starts at 10.15 and the session finishes at 12.30 Support the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch and take part in this winter birds walk.  Bring the family and learn how to identify the more common water and garden birds that are found in the UK.  Children will get the chance to make a bird feeder whilst adults enjoy a cup of coffee on return to the Centre. Family Nest Box Challenge

10.00 - 12.30 Will you take on the challenge of providing a home for our breeding garden birds? Build a nest box for your garden, learn about the birds that may use it and become a garden bird identification expert, you can also make a birdfeeder to take home! £10 per family

The Rutland Wildlife Watch Group

This is for young people interested in wildlife and the environment.

  • The group sets their own programme of events.
  • It is suitable for children aged between six and 12 years.
  • They usually meet at the Anglian Water Bird watching Centre on the second Sunday of each month between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
  • The parent or carer must remain with children under the age of eight years.

Fishing

Junior anglers are always welcome at our fisheries and permits are half-price. If accompanied by an adult, they can:

  • Fish for free within the rules and limits shown on the adult permit.
  • Juniors between 10 and 12 years can fish from a boat with an adult - if they have proof of being able to swim 25 metres.

Anyone under 18 years can enter the England Youth Fly-Fishing Association championship at Grafham Water on 30 May.  The top-ten weights qualifiy to fish for the England Team in 2012 international events. It's a great day with experienced boatmen to help and has been the start of a long international record for many of today's top fly-fishers in both open and ladies teams.
