Anglian Water has been awarded a Ruban d’Honneur in the European Business Awards, held in Athens.

The company was shortlisted with nine other companies across the continent for the Millicom Award which acknowledges organisations with a company-wide commitment to environmental and corporate sustainability.

The firm’s Love Every Drop strategy was recognised as a leading example of how a business can go beyond the legislative requirements of their sector to manage risk and proactively drive improvement. The business strategy was launched in 2010, with 10 goals and over 100 commitments and measures behind it to help achieve sustained improvements in all areas of their operation.

Sarah D’Arcy, Sustainability Manager for Anglian Water, said: “Love Every Drop is about working with our customers, businesses, employees, agriculture, industry and stakeholders to change the way we all think about water, putting it at the heart of a whole new way of living.

“We have set ourselves aspirational goals across the whole of our business including increasing water efficiency, preventing pollution and blockages in the sewer network and reducing operational and embodied carbon. We’re already achieving great results, for instance, we supply the same amount of water today as we did in 1989 despite hundreds of thousands of new homes being built. We’re also seeing dramatic and sustained reductions in sewer blockages from our Keep It Clear campaign – in Peterborough they have fallen by over 80 per cent since the campaign was launched in 2011.

“Being awarded the Ruban d’Honneur and considered alongside companies from across Europe is fantastic recognition of the progress we’re making. But we want to continue to drive excellence and ensure water is managed sustainably in the face of truly global challenges like population growth and climate change.”
