Water reuse and solar hot water systems

We all need to save water. One of the ways you can do this is by putting in water reuse systems. This is often called green water. We've put together some useful information for you below.

What is Green Water or water reuse?

Not everything in our homes which uses water has to have a high-quality supply of it. We don’t need drinking water to flush the toilet, for example. Green Water or water reuse provides a fit for purpose source of water for household appliances where the drinking water quality does not matter.

Why do we need to save water?

Our region is the driest in the UK. The average rainfall here is about two thirds of the national average. Geographically, we are also the largest water and sewerage company in England and Wales. This means we all need to work together to save water as much as we can.

Exploring ways to reduce water use, as well as new and sustainable ways to supply water is a vital part of our work. It’s all part of how we love every drop. But we need you to help us too. Saving water not only helps ensure there’s enough water for all of us but helps save money on your bills too.

What are water reuse systems?

Water reuse systems provide an alternative source of water for appliances that do not need high quality water such as drinking water.
They help to reduce the reliance on public mains water.
The most common systems used are rainwater harvesting, which uses captured rainwater to flush toilets and be used in gardens and grey water treatment, whereby dirty water from domestic appliances is treated then reused.
Water reuse systems must be designed and installed to ensure there is no risk to the end users and must not be directly connected to the mains drinking water supply.
