To support local residents and benefit the environment, we've invested over £3million to provide this village with a new sewerage system.
Residents will have the opportunity to connect to mains sewerage for the first time.
Why are we doing this scheme?
In April 2016, a local resident on behalf of 4 other properties raised concerns that the current method of using septic tanks was not working efficiently. We carried out various tests which proved that the current drainage systems in the village were having a detrimental impact on the local environment. Therefore, under Section 101a of the Water Industry Act, we accepted a statutory duty to provide a mains sewerage system. Please see the table below to view our traffic management programme. Due to the nature of our work these dates may change.
As part of this scheme we're laying a collection system (see our progress here), this will collect the flows from properties. Flows will then gravitate to a new pumping station which will pump the sewage through a new disposal system (see our progress here), then into our existing pipes away to be treated.

Frequently asked questions
Am I compliant with the new septic tank legislation rules?
New legislation for septic tanks came into force in January 2020, which means any household or business that does not comply now risks significant fines from the Environment Agency. If you have a septic tank that discharges directly to a river, ditch or stream, then you are not compliant with the new legislation.
How do I know where my septic tank discharges to?
If you are unsure where your septic tank discharges to you can:
1. Check your documentation from when the septic tank was installed or serviced.
2. If a ditch or stream runs close to your property, look to see whether the end of the outlet pipe is visible.
3. Check the closest manhole near to your septic tank to establish in which direction the pipes are heading.
4. Employ a drainage contractor to check this for you.
Why is a new sewer being provided?
An application was made under Section 101A of the Water Industry Act 1991 to provide a public sewerage system in your area, to prevent the pollution of the local environment by poor performing private septic tanks. We have investigated the situation and agreed that a public sewer should be provided.
Do I have to connect to the new sewer?
No, we can’t insist that you connect to the new sewer if you don’t want to. Although if you do choose to connect, the benefit is that you will no longer be liable for any future operation and maintenance responsibilities associated with your current system. Also, any limitations you may experience with your current system won’t be a problem.
What do I need to do to connect to the public sewer?
After you have consulted with us, you should make your own arrangements to find and employ a drainage contractor or local builder to make the connection. You will need to apply for Building Regulation approval which should be done through your local council before you start any work.
What can I connect and discharge into the new sewer?
You can only connect your foul water system to the new sewer. This includes all the used water from your kitchen, bathroom and toilet. It doesn’t include the disposal of any surface water, water from roofs or swimming pools.
What happens if I don’t connect to the new sewer?
You will continue to use and maintain your current system as normal. However, the Environment Agency or the Local Authority may insist on a connection being made to the new sewer if a private system is found to be causing pollution to groundwater or to a watercourse.

If you run a business from your property which produces trade effluent (liquid waste other than domestic sewage) please contact us immediately to discuss your future disposal options.
What is a lateral drain?
A lateral drain is a piece of pipework which is installed from the main sewer to the property boundary.
What sewerage charges will I pay?
Most properties will be charged on our standard tariff – you can find the current years charges on our website anglianwater.co.uk/charges
When can my property be connected?
As soon as the sewer is ready, we’ll write to you to say the sewer is available, and ready to connect to.
Who carries out the work within my property?
You (the property owner) are responsible for arranging and paying for all work within your property boundary. Building Regulations approval will have to be sought from your local council. They should be able to provide any help or advice you might need.
Who is responsible for the pipework in the future?
If you decide to connect to the new sewerage system as part of this scheme, we will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of the lateral drain up to your property boundary. You will be responsible for the pipework you have laid inside your property boundary.
Why do I need Building Regulations approval?
Private property drainage is required to comply with the conditions of Part H1 of the Building Regulations 2010. This requirement is managed by the Building Control Section of your local council.
Will there be any disruption?
Unfortunately, yes, disruption when installing a new sewer is inevitable. Whilst we will always aim to keep disruption to an absolute minimum it is likely that you’ll experience some inconvenience one way or another.
