Is your home connected correctly?

Sewer connection illustration

If your home isn’t connected correctly, you could be damaging your local environment without even realising it.

It's really important that water pipes and drains are connected to the correct pipes coming in and out of your property.

You’d be amazed how many of them haven't been connected right!

Sewer connections in your home

If the drains in your home are connected to the wrong sewer pipes, they can cause environmental damage and pollution that is deemed illegal by the Environmental Act 1990.

Homeowners are held responsible for making sure their connections are right, so if you're buying a new home, it's very important to make sure this is checked.

Most properties have two separate sewers:

  • The foul water sewer takes waste water from toilets, bathrooms and kitchens to the sewage works for treatment.
  • The surface water sewer takes rainwater from the roof and groundwater run off to a local watercourse (river, stream or soakaways).
If a property has waste water pipes discharging to a sewer intended for rainwater only, it will cause pollution. This is known as a misconnection and the homeowner needs to put this right. Homeowners failing to do this could face a fine.

You may notice grey water in your local watercourse, this could be due to misconnections from local properties which is transferred via our surface water sewers. The most common cause for a misconnection is washing machine waste running into a rain water drain.

Working to raise awareness

We've been working closely with the Environment Agency and other water companies to reduce pollution caused by connecting appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines to the wrong sewer pipe.

You can check your connections are correct by looking on the Connect Right website
