Our plastic pledge

In 2018 we were the first water company to make a radical commitment to rid the east of England  of plastic pollution by 2030. Plastic can provide multiple benefits to modern day living, but it can also have a devastating impact on the wildlife in our rivers and seas.

A lot of plastic waste doesn’t get reused or recycled and around 50% of plastic is only used once then thrown away, this is called single-use plastic. By weight, there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans, by the year 2050. (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2016)

We have several partners who all formed the East of England Coalition, and together have some great tips to reduce our reliance on single use plastic and how to live plastic free.

Reducing the amount of plastic, we use is crucial to protecting our rivers and saving our seas. These items cause immeasurable damage to our environment, wildlife and the future of our ocean.

How we’re tackling the plastic pollution problem

We know that ridding our region of single-use plastics is a big challenge, but that’s why we’re working together with likeminded businesses, local authorities, regulators and organisations. Together, the East of England Plastics Coalition share ideas and resources to find new ways to fight plastic pollution.

Through campaigning and education, we can create real change and put an end to this growing problem. We’re working to end the use of avoidable single-use plastics in our business and support our customers and colleagues to keep making little steps to reduce plastic.

Our ambition is to be world leading in the role water companies can play in the wider campaign to cut down on plastic pollution.

Here’s how you can help.
