Anglian Water will headline this year’s Eco Festival as Gold Sponsor, a family-friendly festival in Colchester, with hopes to raise awareness of water resources and its pioneering projects in the local area that will boost the region’s resilience to the impacts of climate change and population growth.

Supplying Colchester with 75 million litres of high-class drinking water every day, the responsible water company will join other community groups and charities dedicated to positive social environmental change at the festival.

Colchester lies in the driest region in the UK and is particularly vulnerable to climate change. In the last 6 months, the area has had just 70 per cent of its average rainfall. That’s 80mm less than normal and roughly equivalent to 2 months less rainfall than usual. And less rainfall means less water available to replenish water resources in our reservoirs for use tomorrow, next month and next summer too.

Sarah Underhill, Regional Water Resources Manager for Anglian Water said: “Conserving and managing our water resources and protecting against drought is what we do every day. We're working hard to make Colchester more resilient to the effects of climate change and population growth to help prevent water shortages in the future.

“So far, we've upgraded more than 80% of homes for smart meters in Colchester and the surrounding area. Smart meters allow customers to stay on track with their usage, and for us to detect and fix leaks quicker so we can save more water for the wider environment, wildlife and communities.

“We’re also investing £400m into laying hundreds of kilometres of new, interconnecting pipes that will bring water from the wettest areas in the north of our region to the driest areas in the south and east, including Colchester and Ipswich, where water isn’t as easily sourced.

“But we can’t do it alone. As we are now in a period of prolonged dry weather in the East, everyone has a role to play when it comes to saving more water today for use tomorrow. It’s such a precious commodity that often gets take for granted. If we can all reuse water and reduce waste we can help to keep bills down and help the environment at the same time.”

Anglian Water employees will be at the festival giving away free water saving and keep it clear devices for people to take away and use at home. The water company are also sponsoring the new BabyZone at Eco Festival supporting families with resources and information to explore eco-friendly alternatives to baby care products.

Sarah added: “We’re excited to be the headline sponsor of this year’s Eco Festival and look forward to meeting local residents and groups on the day to share our top tips on how to help save water and look after our waterways by taking care over what’s being put down the sink or flushed down the loo.”

The Eco Festival 2022 will be held at Lower Castle Park Colchester CO1 1UD on Saturday 3rd September from 11am till 6pm.
