Sandy beach in Norfolk

From Lincolnshire to Essex, the East of England officially boasts some of the best and cleanest beaches in the world after Keep Britain Tidy today announced the winners of the 2014 Blue Flag and Seaside Awards.

In total, 14 beaches from the region were awarded Blue Flags, while 21 beaches picked up the Seaside Award.

The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards mean visitors can be assured of a great day out and can have confidence that the beaches maintain high standards of management, cleanliness and safety.

For many people, a trip to the seaside also means a dip in the sea. The water quality at all award winning beaches meets the required European Union standards, with the water quality at Blue Flag beaches subject to even tougher tests, meeting the very highest international standards.

Lucinda Gilfoyle, Anglian Water’s Coastal and Catchment Strategy Manager, said: “We are delighted to see three more beaches have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag this year, bringing the total in our region to 14. In addition, 21 Seaside Awards have been given to other popular beaches.

“The Anglian Water region has the longest stretch of coastline than any other water company, and caring for it is hugely important to us. This is why we run schemes like BeachCare – our volunteering programme to keep beaches clear of litter - and why we’re proud that every single one of our 48 bathing waters has passed or exceeded the standards for water quality for the past 12 consecutive years – this year, 83 per cent achieved the very highest water quality standard that can be awarded.

“The awards mean the East of England is home to almost a quarter of Britain’s best beaches – all rewarded for their fantastic facilities, cleanliness and water quality – which is great for residents, visitors, businesses and the local economy.”
