Two hundred of Anglian Water’s staff, suppliers and contractors turned out to support the work of international charity WaterAid last week, raising a staggering £65,000.

The water company hosted its sixth WaterAid ‘Race Night’ at the Sharnbrook Hotel, Bedfordshire, to raise money for the charity. The night featured one of horse racing’s most recognised voices, Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson, leading the race experience alongside spot prizes and an auction.

Richard Boucher, Chair of the WaterAid Committee at Anglian Water, said: “Everyone who attended was incredibly generous in helping us raise such a large sum for a very deserving charity.

was established by the water industry in 1981 to decide how the UK could promote drinking water and sanitation across the world.

“Since then WaterAid has grown in reputation and become the UK’s only major charity exclusively focused on the provision of safe water, adequate sanitation and hygiene to the world’s poorest people.

“Our work with WaterAid is about more than just one night, though. Throughout the year the efforts of individuals combine with events like the Race Night to raise thousands of pounds. Last year, staff and volunteers raised £380,000 for the charity.”

The money raised by Anglian Water, its contractors and suppliers, goes to support important projects across developing nations. In particular, Anglian Water has developed a relationship with Liberia since WaterAid launched its project in this country. Much of the money raised through the company’s fundraising goes to help fund the work and support people in that country.

“The money we raised last year helped over 9,000 Liberians get access to clean water, with 8,000 now able to access effective sanitation.

Richard continued: “Access to clean safe drinking water and sanitation is vital to life, and is something we take for granted at home. We’re proud of the on going work we’re doing to support WaterAid, and the help this provides to some of the world’s poorest people.”

Caroline Wakelin, WaterAid’s Industry Partnership Manager for Midlands and East Anglia, added: “The support of the Water Industry is vital to enable us to help transform the lives of some of the World's poorest people by giving them access to clean water and adequate sanitation - something that we all take for granted in the UK. Thank you to all of the volunteers at Anglian Water who work so hard to raise such fantastic amounts of money.”
