Grafham rod average is a cracking 5.56 despite the heat.

Fish 495 (season 12,063) Returns 89(1,762) Rod average 5.56 (6.84)

It has been rather a hot week at Grafham, although this didn’t seem to put off the fish or the anglers. The rod average stands at a cracking 5.56.

Some good Rainbows have been landed this week with reports of some 5lb specimens seen fry feeding amongst the weed beds. Mr S Summers had a good day out and managed a Rainbow of 3lb 8oz. Mr K Stapley broke the 4lb mark with one fish and took another specimen of 3lb 8oz. The biggest fish of the week were a 4lb Rainbow and a 4lb 8oz Brown both taken by Mr Timothy on a short session.

Boat fishing is certainly the best way to catch your bag, particularly as the fish have begun moving out into the cooler water. Early boats may find the fish close to the shore lines in the morning, although by 10 o’clock they would have moved out as it gets too hot. The best methods currently for boat fishing included sinking lines with blobs, boobies, snakes and tubes, with flies like the Rutland Sparkler and Cormorant fishing well. Anglers will start to find more fish around the aerators and the boils, although please do not anchor up in these areas.

Bank fishing is much more successful early in the day or late in the day, much the same as last week. The fish have switched on to the pin fry and are very visible when they are on the feed, larger specimens are being spotted feeding amongst the weed beds throughout the day and can be targeted in the right locations. The best areas are anywhere where you can target deeper water with intermediate lines and lures, though it may be time to start trying shrimp patterns along the dam and rocky areas.
