It's big fish time at Grafham Water with the biggest Brown weighing in at 5lb 8oz.

Fish 322 (season 16,461) Returns 117(2,639) Rod average 2.76(6.23)

It has been another good week with larger fish being caught with plenty of fish between 3 and 4lb plus coming to the scales. Some of this week’s highlights include a huge 5lb 8oz Brown taken by Trevor Harvey. This was a cracking fish and the largest specimen of the week by just an ounce with Steve Battle again recording a big Brown of 5lb 7oz. Steve took a total of ten fish with his bag including four Rainbows over 4lb and five over 3lb – a total weight of more than 37lb. Some fantastic angling proving that even when conditions aren’t ideal the near impossible can be achieved.

The hot sunny conditions last weekend made fishing difficult, but this should change as cooler weather (and some rain) is now forecast. Anglers fishing the clear water are finding feeding fish.

Boat angling has been the go to method due to some algal growth in the margins. Some good results have been achieved fishing nymphs and diawl bachs, though a return to form for lure fishing has to be mentioned. Most anglers are fishing floating lines, some with midge tips, using a washing line method and retrieving very slowly. Others are using intermediate and fast intermediate, pulling snakes, tubes and lures. You will find fish under the algae in many areas, though your chances are greatly improved if you fish where the clear water is. Good boat areas this week include the Seat, Savages, Rainbow Point and Sanctuary Bay, open water drifting towards G Buoy and fishing off the aerator and the Boils.

Bank angling has certainly been challenging over the past few days with the wind blowing the algae into the bays and up against the dam. Though fish are still there to be caught, particularly early in the day. The south shore including the Seat, Sailing Club Bay, the Sludge Bank and Plummers are being fished very rarely although there are some great fish to be had from these areas. We suggest anglers travel light with waders and keep moving till you spot the fish, this can be a very rewarding way to fish Grafham at this time of year.

Competition news

GWFFA v’s RWFF The John Maitland Trophy
A big thank you to Martin Brocklebank of GWFFA for his account and the results of the match.
“28 GWFFA and RWFF club members fished their annual competition on Sunday 20 August to remember John Maitland from RWFF. This year’s event was held at Grafham Water. Fishing proved quite difficult due to the changeable weather over the previous few days and bright sunshine in the morning. Some anglers caught on midge tip lines using attractors and various nymphs. The match was fished with a 5 fish bag and 5 fish C&R. top rod on the day was Chris McLeod of RWFF who fished from B Buoy to Deep Water Point catching 10 fish. RWFF came out on top - well done to Rutland. Following the match a presentation meal was held at the Grafham Lodge. The clubs would like to thank Mrs Jan Maitland for providing a lovely prize for the winner.”
