Some good sized bags of fish have been recorded at Rutland Water this week plus some mighty Browns between 7-8lb.

Fish 880 (season 32,658) Returns 183(5,969) Rod average 4.8(5.47)

Bigger specimen trout have been taken, including some of the quality Browns that Rutland is renowned for. Roger Bailey of Oakham landed and safely returned a personal best fish that was estimated between 7-8lb. Bank angler Peter Grimwood fished the lodge harbour, netting a 7lb fish. Boat anglers Nigel Savage and Simon Ashton both had fish over 5lb last week.

Boat anglers fishing over the open, deeper water at Rutland have had the most success with some anglers reporting catching 30-40 fish per day. The reservoir’s inlet off the Sailing Club/Spud Bay area, is drawing lots of fish over it. With the aerators off this season the only cooler water that is at the bottom of the reservoir is being mixed with the river water from the Nene and the Welland, subsequently there are masses of fish in the inlet area. Fish are being caught from the inlet area, right through to the main basin and despite being over deep water a lot of fish are being caught in the first 2-3 feet of water.

Anglers are using a mixture of bright miniatures and nymphs to great success. Most of the fish caught are fighting fit Rainbows that have been feeding on daphnia and small (tiny) buzzers. Fry feeding is occurring around the reservoir, particularly out over clear water above the weedbeds. This is due to the water level coming right back up. Some big fish have been sighted which is looking good for the future.

There are few bank anglers. The best tactic is to travel light looking for fish activity and try surface patterns (dries and fry) to raise fish.
