As our region gets drier, it becomes more at risk of flooding. Managing surface water run-off helps protect homes and the environment. That’s why we’re looking into investing in your community to install Sustainable Drainage Systems, known as SuDS.

What are SuDS?

SuDS are an alternative way to manage surface water by reducing or delaying rainwater run-off. They aim to mimic the way rainfall drains naturally rather than conventional pipe methods, which cause problems such as flooding, pollution, or damage to the environment. SuDS is a sustainable and natural way of controlling surface water run-off.

Thanks for registering your interesting and booking an survey appointment with us. We carried out survey visits between 13 June to 06 July, if you are eligible to receive a free water saving device we will be in touch to confirm next steps.

We hope that by installing SuDS features across many areas we can all help to:

  • Reduce flooding from heavy rain and pollution of our waterways
  • Create new habitats and environments for animals and plants
  • Reduce the amount of electricity we use to pump rainwater around our flat region
  • Reduce the amount of carbon we use to operate our drainage networks.

What are water butts and planters?

water butt is used to collect and store rainwater, the rainwater can then either be used by you to water your garden or once it is full, it will slowly allow some of the stored water to drain into the sewer, making space for the next rainfall. It reduces and slows the amount of water entering the sewers during a rainstorm, which helps reduce the risk of flooding.

planter works in a similar way, they contain carefully layered growing media and filter materials. This layering acts as both a sponge and a natural filter, lessening flow to the sewer and removing any contaminants as the water soaks through to the reservoir below. The specialist growing media is designed to sustain plant growth in both wet and dry conditions.

What are the benefits to you?

There are several benefits to installing a water butt or planter. They collect rainwater that can be used for watering plants, washing cars or outdoor cleaning, and other non-potable uses. This can reduce water bills if you are on a meter and reduces the carbon footprint of households.

Installing a water butt or planter onto a downpipe is an easy and effective way for you to conserve water, save money, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to flood prevention.

Every drop of water is precious, so we’re always looking for ways to protect and save it. Our communities are growing, and the average household now uses 15% more than it used to, meaning we all need to use water more carefully at home and in the garden.

Although we can’t make it rain more, we can all make small changes to save more water for ourselves, communities, and local environment. Your actions make a big difference, so discover our water saving tips.

Unfortunately not, we have contacted all the properties eligible. We specifically targeted properties in locations which will help us reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
