Cottenham sewer network upgrade – FAQs
We’re upgrading Cottenham’s sewer network. Subject to approval from the Highways Agency, we’re planning to start work from 15 November 2021. This is crucial work to proactively refurbish and improve over 70 metres of our sewer pipes that run under the High Street and surrounding roads in Cottenham.
This proactive sewer refurbishment will repair damaged sections of sewer and, crucially, avoid having to complete more extensive emergency repair work should the sewer collapse. We take our responsibilities to protecting the environment very seriously and believe it’s right to be proactive, even when we know the work will cause some unavoidable disruption.
It will ensure you; your neighbours and local businesses can continue to flush your toilets without a second thought, and to make sure the local environment is protected.
To allow the works to take place, we will need to close the High Street for through traffic between Broad Lane and Rooks Street. Access will be maintained for local businesses, their customers, and residents and we’ll create parking spaces within the road closure to facilitate residential parking. If we need access to your driveway, one of our team will be in touch with you directly, but we’ll do everything we can to minimise any inconvenience.
This work is expected to last just under four weeks.
This work is to repair damaged sections of the sewer in Cottenham, prevent blockages, or the sewer collapsing, so is not specifically designed to prevent flooding, although, relining the sewer will allow wastewater to flow through the network more easily.
The diversion route runs out of Cottenham on the B1049 to Wilbarton, then east on the A1123 to Stretham, south on the A10 through Chittering to Waterbeach, Landbeach, and Milton, along the A14 to Histon and then joining the B1049 to Broad Lane in Cottenham.
When we plan a diversion route, it must be on a like for like basis to the road we need to close to be approved by the Highways Agency.
Yes, pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters will be able to pass through the road closure.
Our teams will be working on site between 8am and 6pm. You may not always see teams on site during these times because we have several compounds around the village. We are going to be working as long as safely possible to complete these works and to help minimise disruption to the residents of Cottenham.
We’re sorry these works may be inconvenient, taking on board feedback from residents when we were first planning the work, we have considered every option to make it as least disruptive and as quick as possible. We’ll be working weekends too to get things back to normal as soon as we can.
We’ll be holding two drop-in sessions at the village hall on the 12 and 13 October from 4-8pm so we can answer any questions you may have.
We will be sending out more information to residents next week.
