As part of our WINEP (Water Industry National Environment Programme) of works, between 2020 and 2025 we are investing approximately £7million in restoring key sections of our region’s most important rivers and streams. In total we are delivering work on 16 rivers across the region, which includes a section of the river Linnet.

Aim of the works

Our overall aim is to increase the resilience of the river ecosystem, particularly during lower flows in the summer. We want to re-introduce nature-based features back into the river channel to help the river function more naturally and increase conditions for biodiversity to develop. This may include making in-channel enhancements, naturally stabilising the riverbanks, and/or riparian land management options.

We will be working closely with key stakeholders including the Environment Agency and West Suffolk Council throughout.

How might the work affect you?

Most of the work will take place in the river channel and along the riverbank. We will aim to keep any impact on local residents to a minimum. You may see our vehicles or our partner’s, Jackson Civil Engineering, working nearby in the coming months. It is essential that any river restoration delivered does not increase flood risk, and this will be a key consideration through project scoping and design and delivery.

Location of the work:

The section of river that we will be working on extends from Flemyng Road to the A143 (as shown in the map below)

Timescales:

The work will start on the 08th January 2024. The first stage of the works will involve the removal of a select number of trees that are shading some sections of the river. A tree survey's been done to make sure only low or moderate quality trees are removed, and any with an existing Tree Preservation Order (TPO) won't be affected. The trees being removed sit on West Suffolk Council land and the council are fully aware and supportive of the project.

Following this our contractor (Jackson Civil Engineering) will continue with the restoration work within the river channel and along the riverbank. We anticipate the work continuing until the middle of March 2024.

As we carry out the work there will be a need to temporarily close and divert some of the footpaths which run alongside the river. The closures will be generally short term and in small sections as works progress. It is our intention that each footpath will be re-opened at the end of every shift. Please find the temporary footpath diversion routes here.
