Variety is the Key
Claire Carter joined our programme last September after completing her degree in Management Science and Accounting. It’s the variety that Anglian Water offers that convinced her to apply. "My first year has been really interesting. I’ve worked in both operational and regulatory environments and am now spending some time in Wastewater Treatment. There’s a strong company culture that unites the business and influences how people work together and perform."
A Complex Organisation where Wide-ranging Talents are Valued
Claire believes that the Graduate Programme is unique because it presents such a broad overview of the various parts of the organisation. "It’s a huge benefit to be able to experience so many different departments. I get to spend three or four months getting to know each of the different areas of the business and the people. It’s ideal for management training and gives me a real chance to see how different teams fit together and how they achieve their goals.
Personal as Well as Professional Skills
In Claire’s case, a career in water has nothing to do with an engineering or science background. Instead, it was a chance to make the most of both her business training and personal skills. "Going from department to department is also a test of your social skills. You have to be able to get to know people and get on well with them. As a manager, you need more than technical knowledge to succeed, you also need to be able to create teams and gain respect from the people around you. For me it’s clear that water offers almost limitless variety and a chance to work in a business where people not just processes are important."
