After a degree in Philosophy at Southampton University, Sarah Hancox travelled and took a series of roles in different organisations. "I might not have been selected for the Graduate Programme immediately following university," she admits. "I think the time I spent in other jobs made the difference. So far, the best thing about the programme has been the opportunity to learn. Here, we enjoy all the benefits that come from working in a forward thinking business, together with an ethos that’s very public spirited. We’re doing something essential for people and that idea influences every part of our business.

Broad Based Understanding

Since she joined, each assignment Sarah has taken on has enriched her understanding of what is clearly a complex organisation. "I started with a project to revise and redraft part of our website and then moved on to the Water Quality Team where I worked on hazard analyses and on Drinking Water Safety Plans. Moving to the SAP Customer Project give me genuine insights into the way change affects teams and the role IT systems play in the way we work. Now, I’m with the Water Resources Management Team and working on projections for our reservoir levels. It’s particularly interesting in light of the current drought. Everywhere I’ve gone the teams have been great and I’ve been able to build on my knowledge of the industry.

The Charitable Side of Things

Alongside all the hard work Sarah has invested in her career with Anglian Water, she has found new ways to contribute both to her local community and to the wider, global community. "Water Aid is a charity dedicated to finding sustainable solutions to water supply and quality and I really enjoyed raising money through our corporate quiz night. We also run a Give me Five Programme that helps people use up to thirty hours a year of working time to compliment their own contributions to local charities.
