New or replacement water connection

Quick reference guide for getting connected to our water network

If you've never requested a water connection before have a look our step by step guide.  Our water connection application form and further information can be found further down this page.

What is a replacement water connection

A replacement water connection is the provision of a new water service pipe to a property that is already being supplied with water from Anglian Water, either by a direct supply or part of a common supply shared with other properties.

A replacement water supply is normally requested when:

  • There is a need to replace old lead, galvanised and other metallic pipes.
  • There is an increase in water usage, which requires a larger sized water connection. Existing water service pipe is relocated.
  • Existing property demolished and new property or properties are being constructed.
  • Property is on existing common supply and requires a separate supply.
  • Property is divided into multiple properties.

Contaminated land

As part of your application, Anglian Water requires environmental information on soil conditions for your site.  An assessment is required to ascertain the chemical composition of the soil and the physical characteristics of the site.  To find out more please see our contaminated land page

Water reuse systems

Anglian Water fully support the use of water reuse systems and encourage all our customers to be waterwise. Legally, water reuse systems must be designed and installed to ensure there is no risk to the end users and in particular must not be directly connected in any way to the mains drinking water supply. To find out more please see our water reuse page.

Domestic fire sprinklers

Domestic/residential sprinkler systems can be fitted to new and existing properties.  To find out more please see our domestic fire sprinkler page.

Backflow protection/RPZ valves

To find out more about whole site and zone backflow protection please see our backflow protection page.

Water regulations information

It is imperative when requesting new water mains and water connections that ALL
drawings and information requested in Section 5 of the 'Application for new water supplies (mains and connections)' are submitted to us with the application form.  Failure to do so will delay your application being processed.

Meter positioning policy

We have received feedback from individual developers that having street furniture like boundary boxes in adoptable areas is becoming an increasing issue with getting footpaths adopted.  With this in mind, Anglian Water has reviewed its policy on the position of boundary boxes, and as from the 1st April we will start to install the boundary boxes out of adoptable areas and just inside the property boundary.  From this date we will also fit AMR (automated meter reading) smart meters to all new connections.

Boundary boxes

Trickle flow plugs

Important Note – All new boundary box, manifold and wall box connections will be installed with a trickle flow plug at the time of connection. The trickle flow plug will give adequate flow and pressure for the testing of the internal plumbing system, but will not be adequate to supply an occupied property.

The water meter will be installed at the same time as the internal water regulations inspection takes place to ensure compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Therefore it is important that the property is fully plumbed when requesting the meter installation.

When you are ready for the internal water regulations inspection and meter installation, please contact us on 0800 137631  9am to 5pm  Monday to Friday, quoting the Anglian Water job numbers. Please allow five working days for the meter to be installed from the date requested.

At the time of the meter fit Anglian Water will also record an accurate meter location as well as confirming the postal address, occupancy date and occupier if known, which will ensure accurate billing of our new customers.

It is a criminal offence for Developers or their contractors to tamper with the trickle flow plug in any way

Chlorination information

If the service pipe you are installing falls into the following categories, you will need to arrange for this to be chlorinated and tested before we connect it to our network:

  • Pipes are equal to or greater than 25 millimetres internal diameter (32 millimetres outside diameter) and equal to or less than 50 millimetres internal diameter (63 millimetres outside diameter) and are greater than 100 metres in length.
  • Any pipe greater than 50 millimetres internal diameter (63 millimetres outside diameter) and any length.

Please liaise with our Connections Team on 0845 60 66 087 so that the connection can be booked within the chlorination validity period.
