Before you begin:

Location plan

This is a suitably scaled drawing.  Showing the site boundary for your project.

You can use an ordnance survey or google map background. You'll need to outline your boundary so we can locate your site easily.

This is the preferred point where we’ll connect your water supply. We always try to accommodate your preferred point. We'll just need a short description of the location.

So that we can set up the correct billing information for your project, we need some information on drainage.  We'll need to know where the foul water and surface water currently drains to or, where you are planning it to drain to.

Foul water is the used water from things like toilets, sinks, basins, baths, showers etc.  Surface water is the collection of rainwater from hard surfaces.

Important information:

Cost estimates

Our cost estimates are valid until 31 March.  To secure the estimated cost, all connection works must be completed by 31 March .

Please note that payment alone does not guarantee the quoted price.  Should you require a requote after 1 April, you'll incur additional charges as set out in our charging arrangements.

If you're not ready to complete your connection or if your timeline predicts a connection after 31 March, we recommend using our free budget estimate calculator to give you an idea of costs. The estimate is based solely on the information you provide. It may not accurately reflect your final cost estimate following a completed project survey should you apply with us.

We don't recommend purchasing or laying any pipework until your survey is complete.  An assessment will be required to establish the size of the pipework you'll need to lay for your connection.  Due to ground conditions, some connections may require you to lay barrier pipe.

If pipework has already been laid, you'll need to provide evidence of where to and in what material. If the pipe material is not suitable, you'll be asked to either complete a soil report along the route of the pipe or re-lay this in appropriate pipe material such as barrier pipe.

If you're applying for a replacement connection and wish to stay on a shared supply or if you're applying for a replacement connection and wish to be connected into your existing boundary box on the single supply, please contact our Operations team on 0800 145 145 prior to making any payments.

Traffic management

When assessing what traffic management is required to complete a new water connection we must adhere to the Safety at Street Works and Road Works – A Code of Practice.  This is the official UK government guidance outlining how utility companies should manage and safeguard street and road works.

Around 30% of all new connections or replacement supply work will require a road closure to complete the work safely. Please read our guide to road closures to understand the reason why road closures are required, including safety reasons.

The costs for traffic management differ from authority to authority.

When we provide the project survey and cost estimate, the total amount is based on your agreed design to make your estimate as accurate as possible. But in some cases, unforeseen circumstances, highway authority requests, or complex design of delivery costs that appear during the construction phase may increase the total amount payable.  Therefore, the estimate is provided on the information that we had available at the time.  It may be subject to significant variance should anything change.

Once the upfront fee has been paid for and application submitted, the cost estimate will be provided within 28 days.  The fee includes:

  • Digital assessment
  • Modelling assessment – if required, to locate mains which support the water demand needs and establish the size of pipework needed
  • Risk assessment – to ensure the connection can be safely made on the closest viable water main
  • A site visit may be required as part of your assessment. For some applications, this will be arranged as a pre-booked appointment to ensure we can accurately assess your site with you.  We'll attempt to contact you on at least two occasions to arrange this appointment. Where positive contact is not made, your application may be placed on hold until contact is established and an appointment can be agreed.  This is to ensure we complete the correct technical, safety and risk assessments before progressing your application.

  • Administrative costs to process application
  • A project report
  • A cost estimate for construction
  • Guidance documents specific to the site

Once payment has been made and all private pipework has been installed, a pipework check is required and requested by the applicant – This will be carried out within 7 calendar days

Once your pipe, trench inspection and any necessary certification is approved we'll plan in your connection.

For connections that require little traffic management to multi-way lights, the permit approval can take between 14-28 calendar days

For connections requiring full road closures, the permit process can extend up to 3 months

For connections requiring Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders, the permit process will extend up to 3 months.

Once the connection has been successfully completed, an internal fixtures inspection is required.  This is requested by the applicant and will be carried out within 7 calendar days

If approved, the water meter will be installed to provide a full flow of water.

If the external pipework inspection fails because it was not installed in accordance with our guidance, an additional site visit charge will apply.

If there's a change in the original design that requires a second site visit, an additional resurvey fee will apply.

If there's a change in the original design that doesn’t require a second site visit, an additional requote fee will apply.

You might need this information:

Internal fixtures and fittings information

We only need to know this information for commercial or industrial properties or flats and apartments.

This is the type of internal fittings you'll be installing, or already have installed, at the property. For example, we’ll need to know the number of showers, toilets, basins.

If you’re converting a property which will be used for domestic purposes, you may be eligible for reduced VAT. We need to see a copy of full planning permission by the District or Borough Council. Simply let us know the application reference number or provide a copy of the decision notice.

If you’re replacing a water supply that already exists, it’s helpful to have your Anglian Water account number (this can be found on any bill or letter) or meter serial number to hand. Don’t worry if you don’t have this – it’s not compulsory.

If you’re planning to install fire protection such as water sprinklers or fire mains, we need to know in litres per second, how much demand you need. We’ll also need to know how much storage you are installing in litres for fire sprinkler systems.

As part of your project you may need to install a new boundary box.  To view our simple guide, click here.

Under the Water Act 1991 and supported by CDM (Construction Design Management) 2015, Anglian Water has a duty of care to provide a clean and safe water supply.

In certain ground conditions, when laying our pipes, there may be a risk of abrasion or contamination/  A copy of the report from any ground or soil investigation that you have carried out will be required to ensure that the correct materials are used.

The requirements for a ground or soil report and supporting information can be found in our Contaminated Land Guide.
