Used water entering the public foul sewerage system, including trade effluent, is carried to the local water recycling works so that it can be effectively treated and then returned safely to the environment.
Used water entering a surface water drain will not be carried to the local water recycling centre and will discharge directly to the environment without treatment. Only rainwater is allowed to be discharged to a surface water sewer.
A combined sewer may carry both foul and surface water, and will be carried to the local water recycling works so that it can be effectively treated and then returned safely to the environment.
