The BIG sewer switchover

How sewer ownership is changing from the 1st October 2011

Did you know?

Previously if there was a blockage in a sewer or used water pipe outside the boundary of your property, but connecting to the main sewer, you were probably responsible for sorting it out.

A Change in Ownership

From 1 October 2011, we became responsible for looking after many more sewers and pipes that take used water from loos and sinks and the surface water that drains from rooves and hard standing surfaces. This was due to a change in the law.

So, if your property was connected to the public sewer system before 1 July 2011, we are now responsible for the pipes that are outside your property boundary. More detailed information about the transfer of responsibility can be found on the Defra website.

But you still have responsibility…

…for those pipes within your property boundary that take used and surface water away from only your home. Any pipes which don’t connect to our system are also in private ownership. See the diagrams below for how this works for your property.

New developments and connections

Any new connection to our sewer system made after July 2011 will remain in private ownership until they have been formally adopted. If you have any questions or queries about the adoption of these sewer we would advise you to contact your developer or builder.

What if I have a private pumping station serving my property?

Pumping stations have been subject to a phased transfer. From 1 October 2016, we became responsible for many private pumping stations across the region. If you live near a pumping station find out if we know about it by using our pumping station search form.
