Thank you for taking part in our smart meter trial in South Newmarket. Here are some important things you need to know about taking part.

Why are we doing this smart meter trial?

Smart meter technology is constantly improving and it’s important that we stay on top of the changes. So we’re aware of the opportunities available to us to save water across our region. Where we spot an opportunity for development, we trial equipment to see if it’s suitable for us to use.

Will the trial use a new kind of smart meter?

No. The current meters we're trialling will be replaced by our standard smart meters. The communication devices, known as ‘endpoints’, will be a new type that communicate through a different network. This is what we’ll now be trialling.

Was there anything wrong with the previous smart meter?

No. The first smart meters trialled in the area worked really well. Howver we won’t be using the technology in the future. We’re trying something different that has potential to be used more widely.

How big is the trial?

Around 20 properties in the south of Newmarket will be taking part.

Why don’t I have a smart meter already?

We install smart meters area by area (called ‘district meter areas’ or DMAs). Most DMAs in Newmarket already have smart meters. The area you live in doesn’t yet, but that’s why we’re trialling our new smart meter model there. Helping to shape the future of our smart meter programme. At the end of the trial, we’ll replace the trial endpoint with a standard one.

Where will you fit the new meter?

We’ll install the new smart meter in the same place as your current one.

How will my data be collected and used?

Once we’ve upgraded your meter, it’ll automatically send us hourly meter readings. Without us having to send someone to read your meter. Once your meter’s been upgraded, we’ll let you know. You can then sign up to see these hourly readings through MyAccount as well. Your new meter will make sure you only ever pay for the water you use,. It'll also help us spot anything unusual about your water use. Like if water’s being used every hour throughout the day and night indicating a leak. Will I still be able to see the data from the previous smart meter?

No, unfortunately not. As the meter and the online portal linked to it were part of a trial, the data can’t be transferred. The portal used for the original trial will be closed and the data will be deleted. Access to the data from the new meter will be available via MyAccount.

What will happen to the previous trial meter?

The trial smart meter we remove will be returned to the manufacturer. The meter doesn’t contain any personal data about you, The manufacturer won’t even know what property it was installed at.

When will I be able to see my usage data from the new meter?

It takes a little time for the data to start flowing through to the system. Once there’s enough data for you to view, we’ll will contact you to let you know.

What happens if the data shows I have a leak?

If the new meter spots a continuous flow of water indicating a leak, we’ll let you know. If we think you have a leak, we’ll also give you help and advice to get it fixed fast.

How long will the meter be installed for?

The new meter will be installed for up to 15 years. The trial endpoint that we’re installing with it will be replaced at the end of the trial.

What happens at the end of the trial?

We’ll change the endpoint for a standard one. You can then continue enjoying the benefits of being in control of your usage. Saving money on your water bill.

Will I be charged for the smart meter?

No. We’ll install and remove the meter completely free of charge. You’ll continue to be billed as normal for your water and sewerage services.

What if I no longer want to take part in the trial?

If you don’t want to be part of the trial, please contact us on 0345 2682 065 (select option 2). Or email newmarket@anglianwater.co.uk and we will replace the trial equipment with our standard smart meter equipment.
