This proposed pipeline from Cambridge to Rede is approximately 49 kilometres long. This pipeline is the second stage of a 70 kilometre Grafham to Rede pipeline that will transfer water from Grafham Water Treatment Works to Rede storage reservoir.
We've identified a preferred route for the strategic pipeline and submitted what’s called an Environmental Impact Assessment which is also referred to as a scoping report to the Local Planning Authorities that are affected by the proposed route. This includes South Cambridgeshire District Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council and West Suffolk District Council.
The scoping report allows us to seek early feedback from statutory consultees within the planning framework and to obtain initial views on the route design at this early stage.
It's extremely important, for us, to collate feedback from communities that may be affected by the proposed pipeline scheme. To support this, we're running a series of public information events which we're planning to begin in early Spring 2026. Our events will provide a wide range of tailored information. Including detailed maps, timelines and FAQ's where you can speak directly with our project team and specialists to ask questions and share your views in person.
Once environmental surveys, ground investigation and engineering works are complete and community feedback has been considered, the final design will be developed. The planning application is expected to be submitted in Spring 2027.
Plans in progress
Scroll through the table below to see the timeframes we’re working to, for delivering this critical infrastructure. Timeframes may change due to planning approvals or unforeseen construction delays, such as weather conditions.
| What We're Doing | What it Means | When It's Happening |
|---|---|---|
Learning About Nature & Talking to You |
We’re surveying the land, wildlife, and plants and asking people what they think. |
Starting Spring 2025 |
Digging & Discovering History |
We’ll dig small trenches to learn what lies beneath the ground and uncover any artefacts or historic findings. |
Spring 2026 to Autumn 2026 |
Planning approval |
We will submit our plans to the local authority and ask for permission to build. |
Spring 2027 to Autumn 2027 |
Getting Ready to Build |
We’ll set up the site, protect nature, and prepare the land. |
Autumn 2027 |
Building the Pipe |
This is where we’ll be laying down the pipe, building pumping stations and storage tanks and connecting everything together. |
Spring 2028 |
Testing the Pipe |
We’ll clean and test the pipe to make sure it works safely. |
2030 |
Restoring the Land |
After building and testing the strategic pipe we’ll restore the land. |
After 2030 |
