To keep taps flowing reliably in Westgate and across the North Lincolnshire area, we’re carrying out essential work at Westgate Tower. This involves installing new underground equipment that will help secure water supplies for the future.
What work will be taking place?
Some temporary works will be needed in part of the gardens around the tower, but when our work is complete, our aim is to enhance the local community. During the project you may see different activities happening on site, including:
Archaeological investigations
The first stage of our work will involve archaeological digs, giving experts a rare opportunity to explore parts of the city that haven’t been disturbed for over a thousand years. Any discoveries will be carefully recorded and shared with the community in 2026.
Looking after the environment
To carry out this work safely, a small number of trees will need to be carefully removed. This will allow safe access to the area and support long-term improvements that will make the space easier to enjoy in the future.
We’re committed to enhancing the local environment. All trees affected by the works will be replaced as part of a new planting plan, designed to create thriving habitats and support biodiversity across Lincoln and we’re creating a new open public space beneath the tower, giving the community a welcoming place to enjoy once works are finished.
Protecting historic railings and stonework
To allow safe access during construction, the front wrought iron railings and sections of stonework will be carefully removed and restored off-site by specialists.
Once construction is complete - all historic features will be returned to their original positions, the area will be fully restored, and additional fencing will be installed along Chapel Lane to improve safety.
What does this mean for you?
You may see construction activity in the area until 2027 and some areas of the gardens will be temporarily affected, but we’ll be enhancing the local environment once work is complete.
We’ll continue to share updates as the project progresses and make sure the community knows what to expect at each stage. Your water supply will continue as normal
